The class teacher in Octopus Class is Chloe Thwaites, who is supported by a team of 5 wonderful Teaching Assistants: Di, Sarah, June, Nia and Clare.
In our classroom we support the children to work on their communication and social skills through “independent learning” sessions, “playtime” and “snack time” within the classroom, which is also supported by SCERTS. SCERTS is a new approach to working with children to develop their communication and lower their anxiety levels across the school day. We also follow an “Attention Autism” programme, which is an exciting daily group activity that helps the children develop their attention and concentration skills.
The children access directed learning tasks with 1:1 support at their work stations, and take part in group activities at the central table. Our class is set up quite differently to others in the school and our additional room is an “Active Room” where we can have physical brain breaks before returning to our calm and quiet classroom. Our aim is to create an environment that empowers children, makes them feel safe and develops their fascination for learning!
Our topic this term is “Abracadabra” offering opportunities for us to explore magic through exciting sensory stories and science! We are also spending time learning about our classroom expectations and our new friends!
