Comprehension

Reading is more than knowing what a word is – it’s about understanding, interpreting, and engaging with the ideas, information, and stories that those words convey. Developing their comprehension skills helps children to unlock the power of reading to learn, imagine, and understand the world around them.

We teach comprehension explicitly in the Palatine Curriculum through:

• Vocabulary development – teaching new words in context

• Questioning – asking and answering questions about texts

• Inference – reading between the lines

• Prediction – anticipating what might happen next

• Summarising – identifying key points

• Making connections – linking to prior knowledge and other texts

Some children need extra support to understand what they have read. In addition to our reading curriculum, we use the ASD Reading Comprehension Programme and our own Motivational Comprehension Programme.
